法國物理學家Jeanssen發明了左輪天文儀 (Le Revolver astro), 是第一個將金星凌日的觀測留下影像紀錄的光學機器.

1882年Etienne-Jules Marey以Jeanssen的左輪天文儀為基礎, 技術轉移發明了攝影步槍 (Le fusil photographique). 概念是將在太陽前面經過的金星看作是天空中飛行的鳥, 以此將拍攝連續影像的技術應用在動物運動的研究上. Source: La Nature n°464, 1882; ”Bird in Flight”, Marey, 1882.
