Note: In this article I discuss piracy culture in Taiwan in the 1980s, when unauthorized appropriation was not illegal and had a huge impact on intellectuals and popular culture in Taiwan. However, when Taiwan’s trade surplus with the US surged in the early 1980s, the US started to pressure Taiwanese government to adjust its copyright law. Since then it could be considered the end age of the ‘kingdom of piracy’ of Taiwan.
