Note: The focus programme of this year's TIDF (Taipei International Documentary Festival)—"SEA of Sadness"—is curated by Gertjan Zuilhof, who was previously the programmer for the Rotterdam International Film Festival. This program is not confined to the framework defining documentary films, but also incorporates feature films or even experimental moving images. Considering the motive behind this maneuver, perhaps we can ask: With filming tools easy to access nowadays, how Southeast Asia should be presented in the minds of Southeastern artists? Or, what can be considered "self-representation" for Southeast Asia? What similarities or distinctions can be drawn between this consideration and Jean Rouch's thorough examination?
